Philanthropy (Φιλανθρωπία) is defined as “the love of humanity” and it was first introduced by Aeschylus, to describe Prometheus’ gift of fire, to help humanity against a vengeful Zeus.

OUGS, staying true to the meaning of the word and with the help of our members’ contributions we provide donations to organisations that promote the welfare of the community.

Proactiva Open Arms

Following the high influx of refugees into Europe as a result of wars, persecution or poverty and the very many deaths of kids, at the Greek shores, we have decided to assist the work of Proactiva Open Arms – a group of lifeguards from Barcelona that moved to Lesvos island in order to save peoples’ lives.

Proactiva Open Arms is a non-governmental, non-profit organization whose main mission is to rescue refugees from the sea that arrive to Europe. OUGS has raised £460 to assist their invaluable work.

We urge you to learn about their work here.

FUNDRAISING FOR GREECE FIRE RELIEF

Following the tragic incidents of the past days in Greece, we have contributed the amount of £300 to the bank account opened by the Municipality of Rafina-Pikermi and that of the Red Cross. Furthermore, we have set up an Oxford collection point in order to gather products of high demand. The collection point will be at Rodney Porter Building at the Department of Biochemistry (OX1 23QU). If you require access please contact Natassa Kantsadi at 07574735556. Drop-off times would be in the mornings before 11 am and in the evenings after 14 pm. If you are planning on dropping things off during the weekend please send us an email in order to arrange for someone to be there.

As the trucks leaving the London collection points are currently full we are looking for the most appropriate way for transportation to Greece. If you know anyone who could help with this please do let us know.
